Ernst Troeltsch (1865–1923) is one of the most significant Protestant theologians in Wilhelmine Imperial Germany and the early Weimar Republic; his works cover a wide variety of fields, and they have now been republished in a 20-volume Complete Critical Edition with a commentary and detailed introductions. The present Volume 1 contains 21 texts on theology and the history of religion from 1888 to 1902 which already demonstrate the broad sweep of Troeltsch’s theological interests, from painting and drama through the history of theology since the Reformation to engagement with the flourishing disciplines of his age in religious studies and natural science.
