Ginevra

The present volume in the ongoing historical-critical edition of Ferdinand von Saar's works is devoted to 'Ginevra' and casts interesting new light on the interpretation of his works. The Erzählung projects the age-old theme of appearance and reality onto the backdrop of the Biedermeier period and its attitudes on morality. An anachronistic concept of ideal love is counterpointed with an abundance of symbolic references ranging from medieval Minne through the Italian Renaissance up to Russian realism. Exceptionally, the manuscript of the work is extant and is reproduced here in all its stages (fully indexed and documented).
